What’s in a Smile?

Let us take a look at what’s in a smile. Did you know there’s power in a smile? “Smile and the world smiles with you!” Sometimes when we’re in love we can’t hide our smile. Children have the purest smiles. Can you hear a smile? Some people know how to use their smile to make sales or manipulate people. We can also hide our feelings behind a smile. What does a smile do for your health and why is it important in our life? Let’s see what happens in our brain when we smile.

Healthy Smiles

Smiles are contagious, and they can also help you look younger. Doesn’t your whole face seem to lift up when you smile? Smiling can improve your mood if you let it. This action helps to release endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin in your brain that are some of our natural feel good chemicals. Author Ron Guton says in his book:

“British researchers found that one smile can generate the same level of brain stimulation as up to 2,000 bars of chocolate.”


That sounds pretty good to me! I’m not the biggest chocolate fan.

Putting on a happy face can actually boost your mood if you’re feeling sad. Making the choice to smile even when you’re feeling down will give you a boost inside and out.

Fake vs Real Smiles

Many people can spot a fake smile. I’m sure we’ve all used a fake smile before at some point in our lives. Sales people have used them, and many times a fake smile can be perceived as deceitful or having bad thoughts. Fake smiling because you secretly hate something or feel uncomfortable can be a bad thing in certain situations. What do you think? Would it be better to fake a smile if someone were sexually harassing you? Maybe you put on a fake smile at work because you are afraid of losing your job. Does that make it bad? Not always. Smile because you want to.

A smirk, in my opinion, is not considered a real smile. People smirk when they beat an opponent at a competition. Have you ever smirked when you see something bad happen to someone you don’t like? I think I may have done that one a couple of times when my kids do something I told them not to and get hurt. Kind of I told you so smirk. It is our choice what kind of feelings we want to send out into the world with our smile.

Children have the most genuine smiles. I have never been able to not smile when my little three year old looks at me with her face all lit up. Recently, she cleaned up her lunch area by putting everything in the trash including the plate and spoon. She ran up to me to show me how she helped. There was no way I could get mad at her with the proudest beaming smile on her face. My greatest joy is seeing my children smile.

Light up the room!

Have you ever smiled so bright you light up a room? I have! When I met my husband for the first time, my family knew I was in love the moment I walked into the room after our meeting. I couldn’t stop smiling and it was all over my face. The smile of pure joy and love is a beautiful thing! Don’t be afraid to spread your smile when you feel the happiness come over you.

When I worked as a sales lead caller when I was in college, my boss told me that I should smile while I was talking to someone or leaving a message. It would actually get the other person into a better mood. A few actually told me they could hear my smile. Granted, half of them were hitting on me, but it still made me feel good.

If you are feeling down or sad try putting on a genuine smile to help you feel better. Do something that you can smile at. Spend time with people that make you smile. Read something or look at pictures that will help you put a smile on your face. Choose to let yourself smile.

What’s in a smile?

Happiness, love, joy are all emotions shown in a smile. Sometimes we can’t even hide what’s in our smile. Sadness, pain, disappointment and other emotions can be hidden behind a smile. If you want to boost your mood then you should choose a genuine smile. Smile when you talk to people if you want to boost the mood. Don’t hide behind a smile if you’re feeling uncomfortable or scared. Don’t be afraid to reach out to someone that can help you put a smile on your face.

Maybe you’re self conscious about your smile. Don’t let that stop you. Build up your self-confidence.
